The word "Crocus" usually brings to mind images of small flowers that emerge from snow and ice during the first sign of spring. But there are a few species in the genus Crocus, which is part of the Iris family, that bloom in fall or other fall-blooming bulbs with the word "crocus" in their common name. In America, what we call "Autumn Crocuses" is not actually a true crocus but instead Colchicum species or hybrids within this group who flower during Fall.
